Best Exhaust System For Suzuki LTZ 400 (slip ons & full pipe)

0
Looking to get the best LTZ 400 exhaust for maximum horsepower and torque increases? So was I! I did tons of research when I couldn’t keep up with my buddies on the 450’s, and I was super shocked by the results of just adding a full pipe, jet kit, and air filter. If you’re looking to get more power out of your Z400, it REALLY wakes up the power and torque curve just by adding those. Any of the newer aftermarket exhaust systems listed below will be waaaay better than stock, just make sure you pair it with this filter and this jet kit.

Back when I was searching for the best exhaust system for my 2003 Suzuki LTZ 400, I had the hardest time figuring out which exhaust to buy. There’s so many comments on forums about how a slip on will give you just as much of a power increase as a full system, the only difference being a little less on the torque curve, and it was frustrating figuring out which way to go. Finally Dirt Wheels did an exhaust shootout for the z400, and this helped me see the power curve of each pipe, and know which exhaust to buy based on the type of riding I was doing at the time.

CT Racing was the clear winner in the exhaust shootout, giving the LTZ a new power curve with a lot more torque throughout the powerband, and MUCH more power on the mid to top end. I bought a complete exhaust and jet kit for my LTZ 400, and once installed I was easily walking away from Honda 400 EX’s left and right. The trouble came a couple of years later when most of my riding buddies started buying all the 450’s that were coming out. I was having a hard time keeping up with YFZ 450’s when I was bone stock.

Why I wanted To Upgrade The Exhaust On My Z400

In stock form, my Suzuki LTZ 400 was easily walking away from my riding buddies Honda 400EX’s left and right. I didn’t really need any more power for the first year or so, but about two years later when all my riding buddies upgraded to the YFZ 450 and Honda TRX 450, all the sudden I had trouble keeping up on the straightaways. I could still close the gap in the tight stuff through the wooded trails, but I knew I needed a little bit more power to keep up with these guys all around. I wasn’t really willing to give up my the reverse that came on a Z400 in exchange for 50 more cc’s either! After doing the air box lid mod, upgrading to a Twin Air K&N style air filter, and installing and re-jetting my carb, and adding my CT Racing complete exhaust system it was much easier to keep up with my buddies through the trails. (and they would only lose me on the super long straights now, but in the tight stuff I was quicker)

These days however, CT racing pipes are very hard to come by, and usually have to be purchased a used on eBay. If I were to buy a new exhaust for my Z400 today, I would pick the Yoshimura full system since it offers the best all around power increases, and has the highest build quality of the bunch.  It’s all so much easier to get parts for, replacement mount clamps, and new exhaust tips or discs if they ever burn out.

Which Is The Best Aftermarket Exhaust For The LTZ 400?

Everyone has an opinion on what brand of exhaust is the best for the LTZ, but it really comes down to what your needs are and the type of riding you do. For instance, an HMF pipe gives great power increases, but it’s also one of the loudest in the bunch. If you live in a somewhat populated area, are you ride around other cabins in the area or hunters, the HMF or the Pro Circuit full exhaust systems are probably not the best bet. The Pro Circuit in particular is ear piercing, (don’t ask me how I know!!) as I can’t stand to be behind one of my buddies with a Pro Circuit without a helmet on. If noise is a concern however, there are two pipes that stand out that aren’t so loud. The first is the Big Gun Eco exhaust system, and the DMC Quiet Series slip-on for the z400. Both of these systems will give noticeable increases in horsepower across the powerband, but are not as loud as a full-on racing exhaust. The Dubach Racing, or commonly known as DRD, also offers a top rated high performance slip-on exhaust, but it’s also a little on the louder side compared to the Eco models.

The Trinity racing Stage 5 complete exhaust system is one of the nicest looking setups for the Z400 on the market today. The header pipe and exhaust silencers fully polished, and it’s free flowing enough to be a good exhaust choice even for big bore LTZ 400 motors… Should you choose to upgrade your motor in the future. I also really like the look of the Two Brothers exhaust, particularly if you have a yellow LTZ 400 like I did, since the colors and details really match the bike for an awesome look. The GPR slip on exhaust and full systems also have that racing look, and somewhat resemble the GYTR products you’d find on the Yamaha’s.

Should I Go With A Full Exhaust Or A Slip On

Originally I wasn’t sure what to go with for my quad, but after seeing the power curve differences in the low-to-mid range, it was clear that I wanted the increase flow of the aftermarket header compared to stock. If you mostly do trail riding, and just want to wake the motor up a little bit, you’ll get the  most noticeable increases from doing the airbox mod, adding a slip on, and installing a jet kit. However, I think the difference in overall performance is pretty noticeable by having the full system, and you get rid of any restricted air flow that would hold back the motor from making bigger power increases horsepower wise with future mods. You’ll get a lot more benefit from adding a K&N filter, a CDI rev box, and any other performance modifications or upgrades by starting with a free-flowing exhaust system compared to stock. If you can afford it, definitely buy the complete exhaust system from the get-go, you’ll be much happier later on.

Dirt Wheels LTZ 400 Exhaust Shoot Out!

If you’re interest in seeing the old Dirt Wheels Exhaust Shootout for the LTZ 400, I found some nostalgic picture of the magazine article!

Things To Consider When Selecting An Exhaust And Comparing To The Exhaust Shootout

Slip On Exhaust VS Full Exhaust For The LTZ 400 & DVX 400

A lot of the comparisons will show that there isn’t a HUGE difference in performance gains between a slip on pipe and a full exhaust for the LTZ. BUT, and this is a big but, hardly anyone stops at adding an aftermarket exhaust! I know I didn’t!

When you compare a stock bike with a slip on and, and a stock bike with a full pipe, there’s a noticeable difference in the power-band curve and torque down load, if you know your bike well. (you can feel the difference) But overall, the difference is small, and nothing like going from say, a completely stock bike, to a piped and jetted bike. What I’m getting at here, is like anything else, the increase in performance is cumulative.

While you might not FEEL a huge difference and want to spend the extra money on a full exhaust over a slip on kit, once you do the other things to your quad, the improvements are compounding. For instance, you’ll get better horsepower gains from a power commander/cdi box with a full pipe, compared to the same setup with just a slip on. The biggest difference is how free flowing the header pipe is (stock is fairly restrictive by comparison), and how the muffler/silencer pairs with the flow/length/tuning of the header pipe. Where and how much power in different parts of the powerband are affected by the complete setup, and if you plan to do airbox mods, motor work, or anything else down the road, you’re much better off with a complete exhaust.

Early Power Gains Compared To Big Bore Platform

If you just want to keep your motor stock however, and know you’ll never do a big bore kit, you can still get great performance gains of stock form with simply a slip on exhaust, jet kit, air filter, and air box mods. Be mindful about putting heavy tires on your Z400 as well, which I’ll talk about in more detail in the next section.

The Best LTZ 400 Slip On Exhausts Depends On Your Final Project (stock or built motor)

Easy Power Gains For The Z400

My 2003 Suzuki ltz 400 specs didn’t tower over the 400ex back in the day, but they sure did once we were out on the trail! In fact my riding buddies had a hard time keeping up with me on their modded 400ex’s… and that was before I even tinkered with the air box lid mods, and piped and jetted it.

Here are some easy power gains you can do to really open up the LTZ, and get the most out of adding an aftermarket exhaust.

LTZ 400 Airbox Mods

Getting more air into that engine once you’ve added a pipe and jet kit is critical. The easiest thing to do here is remove your airbox lid. But, I ended up drilling some holes in the back of my airbox housing to allow the air to pass freely through the box, and not swirl dirt and sand unnecessarily around the filter. if you’re uncomfortable removing the lid, at the very least, hole saw some holes into the side of the airbox to get more flow into that sucker. Be careful not to drill holes in the bottom, or anywhere close to where the rear tires will sling mud or dirt directly onto your air filter.

Jet Kit

You need to rejet even if you just get a slip on. I know some people say you can get by with not doing it, but to really get your monies worth out of your aftermarket upgrades, you’ve gotta get more fuel in there to match the increased airflow from the pipe and filter. You’ll also get a bit more pull in the bottom end once you get it dialed in, and it won’t bog when you stab the throttle coming out of a turn.

Aftermarket Rear Tires Do’s And Dont’s

I never thought by upgrading my ltz 400 wheels and tires, I’d mess with the performance too much. If felt super strong pulling all the way through the gears in stock form, and spinning the rear tires at will on any surface was a piece of cake. Never did I consider the weight difference, and how light and puny the stock tires and rims are!

After getting two flats on the stockers, I decided to buy some aftermarket rear tires, and went with the Maxxis RAZR’s. Just by changing my rear rims and tires, the motor started to drag a little out of the corners if it wasn’t revved up and in the right gear. It just didn’t make enough torque to spin the hell out of the Maxxis Razr’s I put back there, and it was noticeable!

Once I piped and jetted the bike, I didn’t have that problem anymore. Just the airbox mods, air filter kit, and exhaust and jetting was enough to restore the torque to better than factory with the heavier Maxxis tires, and I could keep up with my buddies 450’s much better after that.

Used Suzuki LTZ 400 Exhausts For Sale On eBay

If you have absolutely must have the Dirt Wheels exhaust shootout winner, the CT racing complete exhaust system, the best place to buy a used one is on eBay. This is where I bought mine and I paid around $250 plus shipping. You can see the exhaust they have for sale right now here.

The Best Place To Buy A New Z400 Exhaust (On Amazon)

Back when I bought my CT racing pipe on eBay, I was very leery of what condition it would show up in. It did have a few scratches that I couldn’t see in the pictures, but overall it was a decent transaction. But this was a number of years ago, and in this day and age if I were to buy another complete exhaust again, I would definitely buy it on Amazon so if I didn’t like the fit in the finish or even the fit when installing it, I could easily return it with no issues. (I had a hell of a time getting my CT racing header pipe to fit right, I think it was because it had been previously installed on another bike and had been through the heat cycle and warped to fit that bike a little bit… so I would definitely want a new exhaust the second time around)

You can pick up the brand new edition Yoshimura RS-2 Complete Exhaust here on Amazon for around $500 with free shipping. (also has awesome reviews from a lot of riders)

Conclusion: My Top 3 Picks For The Best Suzuki LTZ 400 Exhaust System

#1 Top Pick – Yoshimura RS-2

The Yoshimura exhaust systems are definitely my top pick for the see 440 reasons,. First, the build quality is the best in the industry, and Yoshimura has done the most testing on the z400 motor, and Yoshimura team was winning all the races in the 400 class with their Yoshi-tuned race bikes back in the day. This is the best all around increase in horsepower throughout the powerband for the LTZ, and provides a noticeable increase in power down low all the way through the mid-range…. and extends through the top end well past the rev limiter. A simple jet kit will tune your bike to run perfectly with this pipe, and if you choose to upgrade the CDI box in the future, it’ll work even better. If I had to replace my exhaust on my LTZ today, this is the system I would buy.

#2 Top Pick – Big Gun Eco Or Big Gun EVO R

My second pick for an aftermarket exhaust for the Z400, would be the Big Gun Eco system. The styling is second to none, and the build quality is the best on the market for the money. If you’re looking for an inexpensive aftermarket exhaust system  to give your LTZ a little more power but not break the bank, this is definitely the way to go. Most all riders will be happy with the power increase of the Big Gun systems, and they also make great REV boxes to go along with the slip on and full exhausts.

#3 Top Pick – HMF

The only reason the HMF is not at the top of my list for the best rated exhaust for for the LTZ 400, is simply because they’re a little bit too loud for some regulated riding areas. For instance here in Florida, we ride in the Ocala National Forest, and if they ever change the noise regulations or stop us with a sound gun, I’d hate to have to change out my exhaust simply because I was over the maximum decibel rating for riding in that area. It’s well known that the HMF is a good value, and offers an excellent increase in power, but I simply don’t want to have to switch out my exhaust tip based on where I ride. A lot of riders on the ATV forums said it’s easy enough to carry extra exhaust tips and an allen key, and put on the quiet tip or the spark arrestor tip while riding in select areas. For me this is just a hassle, and I’d rather go with the Big Gun or Yoshimura exhaust systems, both of which I think provide a more natural increase in horsepower throughout the power curve anyway. But if you happen to be racing or don’t care about your noise levels, the HMF exhaust system is one of the best on the market for the money.
