Today, cloud-based VoIP has become extremely popular as a communication option in most workplaces. And, with the wide variety of virtual business phone system providers that have emerged, users have more options available to them than ever before.

Cloud-based phone systems are extremely simple and easy systems to install and use, and since everything is hosted in the cloud, you do not have to worry about the hardware, installation and maintenance of the system. Also, a cloud-based phone system does not require any wiring. Everything can be configured via the service provider’s portal i.e. phone lines, voicemail, features, etc. And, since everything is based in the cloud, the platforms offer scalable and flexible solutions that will grow along with your business.

Although you may not really know much about VoIP, the chances that you have heard about the Vonage brand is huge. Vonage is probably at the forefront and amongst the biggest players responsible for VoIP being used as a business phone service today. In the year 2016, Vonage was named as a visionary by Gartner. However, today, there are several other players who have emerged as competition to Vonage, RingCentral being one of the most popular options.

In this article, we will be evaluating the offerings, pricing and other aspects of Vonage Business and RingCentral and see how they stack up against each other.

RingCentral Approach

The offerings of RingCentral are mainly targeted towards medium-sized businesses and it allows the people in an organization to make use of their existing hardware (mobile phones, laptops, tablet devices) along with the company’s infrastructure and network.

Earlier, RingCentral offered software that allowed the employees of a company to use their personal devices on the networks of the company to make their business calls using their personal mobile phones. Today, RingCentral requires businesses to sign up for service plans that offer this function along with more features. Without purchasing phone lines and the features that accompany them, customers cannot make use of the app that enables the BYOD (bring your own device) capability.

Vonage Business Approach

Vonage Business targets small to large businesses and the main difference between RingCentral’s approach and Vonage Business’ is the difference in pricing. RingCentral has 4 basic plans with a graduated set of features. Vonage Business on the other hand, did not have any set plans until now and followed a “build your own” plan. This offered great flexibility but also made the solutions quite complex, especially for small- and medium-sized businesses. Vonage Business has launched a 3-level plan only recently, but also has the customizable option for those who want to customize their plan as per the needs of the business.

Vonage Business also offers a mobile app that lets companies allow their employees use their own personal devices along with the service. Vonage Business also allows users to consolidate their messages from various devices such as their mobile phones, computers, desk phones, tablets into a single inbox for effortless management.
