I’ll go over what cameras I’ve been using the past few months, and also show you my favorite photography lighting kit that’s less than $100, that’s lets me shoot HD quality 1080p videos right for my iPhone. Most people think that you have to spend thousands of dollars have to quality video, but the right lights, a cheap tripod, and a decent smartphone mount, you can have entry level quality that’s good enough to start any YouTube channel or daily blog. Of course it’s always better if you get a decent camera to start with, but it’s not always in everyone’s budget.
Best Vlogging Camera For Beginners
If your a beginner blogger or vlogger, you’re going to want a good balance of ease of use and decent low light performance. Most DSLR’s handle low light extremely well, but they’re not the perfect solution for most bloggers. Without experience, they can be cumbersome to set up, and more importantly more difficult to transport and usually require a case or method of carrying that’s not something you can just slip in your pocket or purse so you can break it out whenever you want to shoot a blog video.
The best point and shoot camera for beginners is hands-down the Canon g7x. This is the number one recommended camera by a ton of YouTubers, including Casey Neistat with millions of followers. It runs around $600 and will last you for many years to come. Even if you upgrade to a DSLR later, it’s good enough quality to use as a second angle angle camera later on. The only drawback to Canon g7x is the lack of an external mic input, should you ever want to upgrade your audio to a Rode mic or similar. Which brings us to our next camera…
What Is The Best Vlogging Camera With An External Mic?
It’s sad that the G7X doesn’t have an external mic input, because if it did, it would be the most versatile, affordable vlogging camera on the market today. It’s crazy that the big brother, the Canon t5i DSLR costs the same amount of money for a base camera kit, and is fully upgrade-able with all the bells and whistles for a true studio quality setup. You’ll still need a set of camera lights for indoor shooting or recording in low light (I recommend these), but overall low light level performance is greatly increased when moving to a large body camera. If DSLR’s aren’t your thing, and you’re looking for a cheaper vlogging camera, check these out.
Best Cheap Cameras For Vlogging
If you only want to spend a couple hundred dollars on your vlogging camera, I would actually recommend you do what I did and get yourself some photography lights, a tripod, and a smartphone mount. (to see the one I use, check out my setup) Almost everyone either has an Anrdoid or Iphone these days, and with a little tweaking, you can get decent entry level 1080p shots out of it. You can also use the built in video editing app for quick easy uploads to get you started. The most important thing is to keep it simple so you’ll produce videos everyday. Once your channel is making money, you can easily invest in the next best notch up in equipment level. For more affordable vlogging equipment, and Canon vlogging cameras click here.
Best Vlogging Cameras For Bloggers
Bloggers are a little bit different breed, in that we still need images to work with from our videos, and if we’re not usually using a fancy editing software that can pull an HD frame out of a video before uploading it. It can be a pain in the neck to get quality images that match our videos, which is what makes wifi enabled cameras come in real handy!
With the newer wifi enabled digital cameras and camcorders, you can easily snap a photo in addition to your video, and send it to whatever device you choose. This makes it super it super simple to have better quality instagram images that match your videos…. Makes for a nice seamless click through when people find your posts on social media.
At 1080p, the SX610 might just be one of the best budget cameras for vloggers. With features like you’d find on higher end models like image stabilization and auto focus, there’s a lot of bang for your buck in this little guy.
It comes standard wifi enabled, and you can easily download the free canon connect app and send pictures directly to your phone wirelessly. It has long battery life, with quick recharges for on the go recording. The only cons are an internal noise that the microphone picks while recording, and it’s not the best in low light situations. At a price point between $200 – $250, this is a great value.

I’d have to say if the G7X is in your price range, it’s hard to beat. You might also look at the new model, the G7x Mark II which runs the upgraded auto-focus and image tracking firmware. If that’s a little over your budget, maybe take a look at the Canon G9, which is also a great point and shoot for vlogging, it just doesn’t have a flip out viewfinder screen… but everything else is pretty awesome just like on the G7x. If the G7x is out of your price range, here a couple other options of vlog camera models with a flip up screen.
